ABSTRACT:
A quasi-experimental study to assess the effectiveness of planned teaching program on knowledge regarding Weaning among Primigravid mothers in selected rural area at Bhuj Gujarat. The objectives of the study were (a) To assess the pre-test level of knowledge regarding weaning among Primigravid mothers. (b) To evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme regarding weaning by comparing pre-test and post-test score. (c) To find out the association between the post test knowledge score of mother with their selected demographic variables. The research approach selected for the study was quantitative research approach and research design used in this study was quasi experimental design. The study was conducted at selected rural area at Bhuj Gujarat. The samples were selected by simple random sampling technique. The sample size was of 60. The instrument used for the data collection was planned interview questionnaire used to assess the knowledge regarding weaning. After 7 days interval the same planned interview questionnaire was used to collect the data from same Primigravid mothers for assessing post-test. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The effectiveness of planned teaching programme was assessed by using paired ‘t’ test. The association between knowledge of demographic variables of Primigravid mothers was analyzed by inferential statistics, (Chi-square test). It reveals that mean value of pre-test knowledge score was 10.883 and post-test knowledge score was 14.75. The mean difference was 3.867. The Standard deviation for pre-test score was 3.412 and post-test score was 2.53. The obtained ‘t’ value 7.03 which was statistically highly significant at the level of p<0.001 (df = 59 table value was 3.46). It is inferred that the planned teaching programme regarding knowledge on weaning was highly effective. This will promote the children growth and development.

INTRODUCTION:
Breast milk is a best and safest food for young babies. Breast feeding alone is adequate and sufficient to maintain optimum growth and development of an infant up to the age for 4 to 6 months. It is therefore, necessary to introduce more concentrated energy rich nutritional supplements in sufficient amounts to enable them to grow and stay healthy.1
Weaning or complementary feeding is the process of gradual and progressive transfer of the baby from the breastfeeding to the usual family diet. During this process the infant gets accustomed to foods other than mothers milk.2
Weaning does not mean discontinuity of breast feeding. Weaning foods are given in addition of breast feed when the amount of breastfeeding is inadequate. Weaning is one of the many milestones in baby’s process of development. It is very important for baby’s health and development. Weaning is process were baby moves or shifts from having breast feed to consuming solid or semi-solid. Its gradual adaptation of the baby from breast feed to other foods.3
NEED FOR THE STUDY:
Prevention is key step but early intervention can improve the outcomes. According to WHO 2012, the gradual replacement of breast milk by solid foods as the main source of nutrition for infant is essential in order to maintain an adequate range of growth for infant.4
Malnutrition in children is widely prevalent in India. It is estimated that 5.7 million children are underweight (moderate and severe) and more than 50% of deaths in 0-4 year are associated with malnutrition. The most vulnerable period for malnutrition is first 2 years of life. (Usually 6months –12 months). This study is conducting to minimize infant mortality and morbidity rate by teaching Primigravid mother about proper weaning and weaning foods.
OBJECTIVES:
· To assess the pre-test level of knowledge score on weaning among Primigravid mothers.
· To evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme regarding weaning by comparing pre-test and post-test knowledge score.
· To find out the association between post-test knowledge scores of mother with their selected demographic variables.
HYPOTHESIS:
H1: There will be a significant difference between the pretest and post-test level of knowledge score regarding weaning among primigravid mothers.
H2: There will be a significant association between the post-test levels of knowledge Score of weaning among primigravid mothers with their selected demographic Variables.
METHDOLOGY:
RESEARCH APPROACH:
Quantitative approach
RESEARCH DESIGN:
A Quasi experimental design was chosen for the study.
VARIABLES:
Dependent variables:
Knowledge on Complementary feeding
Independent variables:
Age of the mother, mother’s education, mother’s occupation, religion, family income, type
of food and source of information
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE:
Simple random sampling technique
SAMPLE SIZE:
60 Primigravid mothers
MAJOR STUDY FINDINGS:
Major study findings include
1. Findings related to demographic variables:
a) The majority of 29 (48.33%) respondent were 21-25 years.
b) The majority of 25(41.67%) respondent were primary education
c) The majority of 20 (33.33%) respondent were housewife
d) The majority of 37 (61.67%) respondent were Hindu
e) The majority of 21 (35%) respondent were Rs.5001-8000
f) The majority of 38 (63.33%) respondent were vegetarian
g) The majority of 31 (51.67%) respondent were parents
2. Findings related to assessment of pretest and post-test level of knowledge scores regarding weaning among Primigravid mothers:
The findings of pretest score of level of knowledge shows that, 25 (41.67%) of Primigravid mother had moderate knowledge and 22 (36.67%) of mother had inadequate knowledge and only 13 (21.67%) of them had adequate knowledge.
The findings of post test score of level of knowledge shows that, 40(66.67%) of mother had adequate knowledge and 15 (25%) of them had moderate knowledge and only 5(8.33%) of mothers had inadequate knowledge.
3. Findings related to the comparison of pretest and post-test level of knowledge scores regarding weaning among Primigravid mothers.
The analysis revealed that the mean score was increased from 10.883 to 14.75 and the standard deviation was decreased from 3.412 to 2.53 after the administration of planned teaching programme. The obtained ‘t’ value 7.03, which was statistically highly significant at the level of p<0.001. It implied that, the planned teaching programme regarding weaning among Primigravid mothers was very effective.
4. Findings related to association between the knowledge score of mothers with their demographic variables.
Regarding association between the knowledge score of mothers with their demographic variables like Age of mother, mother educational status, mother’s occupational status, religion, family income, type of food and source of information. Mothers education status, mother’s occupational status, religion, family income, type of food and source of information that all have significant association with the post-test knowledge at 0.05 level.
CONCLUSION:
The present study conducted in that primigravid mother had inadequate and moderate knowledge in pre-test. After giving effective planned teaching programme majority of the mothers had adequate knowledge on weaning. This understood that proper planned teaching programme regarding weaning among primigravid mothers surely improve their knowledge and promote the children growth and development.
